TCNK: A Unique Car Showroom and Garage

The TCNK car showroom and garage, designed by Tetsuo Kawabe, is a testament to innovative architecture and design. Located at the entrance of a new development area in Niigata prefecture, Japan, this project stands out as a symbol of modernity and elegance.

What sets TCNK apart from other car showrooms is its unique design inspired by the surrounding environment. Tetsuo Kawabe carefully investigated the site and drew inspiration from images that seemed to either spring from the ground or float in the air. After considering numerous proposals, the design featuring floating volumes was chosen, creating a captivating visual effect.

The key feature of the TCNK design is the illusion of floating volumes. To achieve this effect, a 5-meter cantilever and suspension structure were implemented, making it appear as though the volumes are supported by only one-lined columns. This architectural feat not only adds to the visual appeal of the showroom but also showcases the technical prowess of the design team.

Working alongside Tetsuo Kawabe were a talented team of architects, engineers, and landscape designers. Koichi Tajima served as the assistant architect, Tetsuo Nagahashi as the structural engineer, and Yoshimasa Ohishi as the landscape designer. Their collective expertise and collaboration brought the TCNK design to life.

The TCNK project commenced in November 2006 and was completed in October 2009. Throughout its construction, the design team meticulously crafted every detail to ensure the showroom and garage met the highest standards of quality and functionality.

This exceptional design has garnered recognition and acclaim. In 2021, TCNK was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
